Education & Skills Funding Agency- Individual Learning Records Department - Research round case study 2 weeks

We must collect the right ILR data with the Learner Entry Tool, which is designed for learning providers.

During my time at the ESFA (3 months) I worked on several different research rounds, using a mixed method approach, and working with different teams in charge of the particular resource.

Round 3 included the following outline:

  • Desk research and stakeholder interviews

  • Short user survey

  • Prototype review

  • Persona profile and assumption reviewing

  • User story mapping

  • Report

  • Presentation

  • Create a research repository in Gitlab

Some of the research goals for testing the prototype:

  • Further investigate how users are coming to the VR rules, how they interact and see if there are any issues from what they currently already do

  • See how users interact with the prototype by asking them to add in UKPRN (as test), see what their first impressions are when interacting with the search landing page- the info listed (latest changes- colour indication) and the categories order (tabs)

  • How do they interact with the results page- do they want to change the filters, how do they interpret the rule result, does this feature everything they need? Do they need anything made clearer such as bold, colors, and highlights?

  • Understand how they interpret the results, and filters and see if they expect anything else

  • Test the changelog, to make sure has all the top wanted information areas included, See if the highlighted text makes it easier for them and the new filters

  • Perceptions of the prototype compared to what they already do

This round of research was a crucial step for the prototype development. It also concluded that the next lot of research sessions needed more participants from the other user groups and less experienced user groups, so we could experiment with those new to the resource.

Reviewing the first iteration of the prototype with users allowed the team to iron out the easy-to-win changes that were going to be developed into an MVP prototype.

Some of the key insights from round 1 included validating changes to the functionality on how a user makes use of colour as a tool and further insights into how the search tool should perform.

Other insights unexpected were also discovered. Some were not so important for this round, however, they were documented within the research repository.

Within the Individual Learning Records team, my role was to assist the new developments on how to progress the technology and resources available within the MI system (online database) and online resources available to engineers, software suppliers, software writers, and product owners.

The subject area was a complex and challenging online database resource that needed thorough desk research.
